Antiquity and Modernity Are A Unique Style
In a poetic blend of eras, photographer Ekaterina Kazakova brings history into the present with a dreamlike editorial starring actress, singer, and model LizaSio. Dressed in a bespoke creation by designer Svetlana Grileo — known for her intricate cuts and timeless silhouettes — the model embodies a modern heroine with echoes of antiquity. The shoot, set against a moody, rain-kissed backdrop and featuring a majestic horse, captures both vulnerability and power, softness and strength. In conversation with VIONNE, Kazakova shares the inspiration and artistry behind the lens.
Behind the Lens with Ekaterina Kazakova
VIONNE: Your vision seamlessly blends historical elegance with modern flair — how did the concept for this shoot come together, and what inspired the direction?
Ekaterina: I have always admired this combination, and designer Svetlana Grileo skillfully combines vibrant contemporary elements with the elegance of past centuries in her dresses. It’s her creations that consistently inspire me for such projects.
VIONNE: The dress by Svetlana Grileo is a statement on its own. How did the garment influence your approach to composition, mood, and storytelling in this series?
Ekaterina: I’ve been working with Svetlana Grileo for a long time, and we always develop the concept for each shoot together. Sometimes, the outfits are created specifically for the project and the model. That’s why our stories always begin with the dresses — they influence everything from the location and color palette to the lighting.
VIONNE: There’s a cinematic softness and regal poise in each frame — especially in how the model interacts with the horse. What were some key decisions or challenges during the shoot that helped you capture that emotional balance?
Ekaterina: This was actually a very challenging shoot! We worked in the evening, it was lightly raining, and the model was quite afraid of horses. But she overcame her fear and even bonded with the horse. The soft evening light and the mist after the rain created a magical atmosphere. In the end, the challenges we faced only made the results more beautiful.
VIONNE: Photography, fashion, and history all meet in this editorial. How do you personally define the relationship between antiquity and modernity in visual storytelling?
Ekaterina: As the classic saying goes, “Everything new is well-forgotten old.” Fashion is truly cyclical. Elements from the past — like corsets — often return, looking fresh and modern, while adding charm and character. In recent collections by major designers, we’re seeing more floral motifs, voluminous skirts, ruffles, and frills. Amid today’s oversized silhouettes, there’s something very tempting about showcasing refinement and beauty that feels timeless — yet, thanks to modern techniques, still looks strikingly contemporary.
