Whispers of Power
In Hushed Tones, New York City-based fashion and beauty photographer Audrey Hope Rinehart creates a soft yet charged editorial inspired by the visual language of classical art, particularly the Impressionists and Pre-Raphaelites. Her fascination with historical depictions of women — from intimate daily rituals to fantastical, dream-like scenarios — becomes the foundation for a story that feels both romantic and quietly political. Through models Karla-Camille Sarmiento and Megha Patel, styled in lush textures, pearls, veils, and painterly silhouettes, the editorial reimagines women not as passive figures of beauty, but as complex characters with private thoughts, hidden power, and inner worlds of their own.
At the heart of the series is Audrey’s belief in visual beauty as a form of protest — a response to stereotypes, silence, and oppressive systems that have shaped women’s lives throughout history. Drawing from the idea of courtly women in the Renaissance era and beyond, who created influence through intellectual salons, private networks, regency, artistry, and land ownership, Hushed Tones explores the subtle power of what remains unspoken. Every whisper becomes a strategy, every secret romance a risk, every glance a negotiation. With makeup by Catherine Gordon and Audrey’s own direction across photography, hair, and wardrobe styling, the story captures the “hushed tones” of powerful women’s lives: the secrets, softness, intrigue, and resistance that exist behind closed doors.
